United expands at IAD, temporary terminal or no
United Airlines is significantly expanding its operations at Dulles International Airport (IAD), strengthening the hub for both domestic and international flights. The nation's self-proclaimed flag carrier aims to enhance connectivity across its network, particularly in the eastern United States, where Newark dominates.
Per the Washington Business Journal, United plans to add nonstop flights to 13 new destinations from Dulles in 2024 with a focus on connecting smaller eastern US cities. The IAD focus not only benefits frequent travelers with more direct flight options but also serves to alleviate pressure on EWR. The move capitalizes on Dulles's East Coast location and DC's international status, with potential to grow both connecting and O&D passengers.
Unfortunately, the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority is responsible for accommodating growing passenger numbers and enhancing the IAD experience. With already-high airport-use fees, and supplements from the much more successful DCA, IAD is struggling through significant transformation.
First up is the construction of a new 14-gate, 440,000-square-foot concourse, named Concourse E. Scheduled to open in 2026, it will feature modern amenities, spacious waiting areas, and improved passenger flow. This new concourse has been in the planning stages for several years, with initial proposals and discussions dating back to at least 2016. As the Points Guy points out, "this new facility won't actually replace the C/D concourse, though that facility is in need of a replacement." That will happen someday, the Horizon hopes.
