Marriott confirms 833 layoffs at Bethesda headquarters
Marriott International will lay off 833 employees at its Bethesda headquarters, effective 3 January as part of global cost cutting, as confirmed by the Washington Business Journal. The hospitality giant, which filed a WARN notice with the state last week, said the reductions will primarily affect corporate roles, not hotel operations. The layoffs align with Marriott's broader plan to streamline operations and achieve $80–$90 million in annual cost savings by Q1 2025.
The announcement follows a 22 percent drop in Marriott’s third-quarter net income and a lowered earnings outlook for 2024. While the headquarters, opened in 2022, houses around 3,500 employees, it is unclear how the layoffs will affect its occupancy. Marriott emphasized that it is still hiring, with several hundred open roles available, some of which may be filled by impacted employees.
